The delights of spring continue and each day seems to see a little progress on lots of fronts. Today at working bee we burnt a large pile of left-overs – blackberries, branches, dried ivy…. that had missed the mulcher. Then a bit of mowing, more tying down of branches, mulch on some of the trees and finally hand spraying wettable sulphur on one of the trees that is showing signs of powdery mildew – a Royal Gala I think. A check on woolly aphid on the one infested Golden Delicious suggests I am getting it under control. The codling moth traps are collecting a couple of moths each night but no signs of eggs on leaves. Fruit is growing virtually as you watch – I can discern a difference every day. Next week will be time to start thinning!
