i love the idea that the harvest is not just for immediate use, but can be managed to stretch into the winter.  The processes of storing in this way link me to the women through the ages who could only provide for their families by being able to keep seasonal fruit and vegetable for longer periods of time.

over the last six weeks I have bottled lots of fruit – mainly pears and peaches – and dried quantities of apples.

With the girls we made tomato passata with tomatoes we purchased and I have also dried and frozen some of our own tomatoes.

Now the basil is plentiful and beginning to have flowers, so I have picked it and turned it to pesto.

Finally as we left for holidays I put away the garlic that stores the extra fruit and veg – symbolically ending that very busy phase of autumn.
